We are honored to celebrate Melvyn Smith, Jr. as the recipient of the 2025 IDEA Impact Award!

This year’s honoree, Mel, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility through both strategic leadership and day-to-day action. At the heart of his work is a clear and compelling vision—one that has been embedded into every level of his organization, Genworth. Mel led the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan that made IDEA a core part of G’s values and operations, complete with measurable goals and ongoing accountability.

But Mel’s impact goes far beyond strategy. He has cultivated a culture of inclusive excellence—recognizing and celebrating the contributions of diverse employees through innovative programs, recognition initiatives, and active participation in employee resource groups. His leadership has inspired mentorship, empowered emerging leaders from underrepresented backgrounds, and created space for employees to shape IDEA efforts themselves—most notably through the launch of an “IDEA Innovation Lab.” His work in accessibility has also been exemplary—championing the use of assistive technologies, inclusive communication practices, and programs that ensure all employees feel welcomed and supported.

Outside his organization, Mel continues to lead by example—serving as a mentor, collaborator, and thought leader across industry groups, including his work with Richmond SHRM’s Richmond Area Diversity Roundtable and DEIB-focused sessions that have sparked important conversations and inspired change.

Mel’s approach is grounded in empathy, inclusion, and a deep respect for every voice at the table. He models the kind of leadership we all aspire to—intentional, collaborative, and transformative.
