Journey to Certification: Let’s Talk Scholarships! Part Two

Part 2

Virginia State Council is committed to advancing the HR profession in Virginia through initiatives like the HR Virginia Scholarship Program. In part two of our three-part series about Virginia SHRM scholarships, Anastasia Mizitova, HR Virginia Certification Director, recently interviewed Amy F. Painter, Ed.D., Chief Human Resources Officer at Rockingham County Public Schools, Jennifer Chan, HR Operations Analyst at Dynamic Aviation and Bridgewater College SHRM President, and Casey Northrop, Employee Experience Specialist at Farm Credit of the Virginias, to discuss their insights and experiences as recipients of the 2023 HR Virginia Scholarship.

AM: What was your Journey and Experience During the Scholarship Application Process?

  • Amy F. Painter: Navigating the Virginia SHRM scholarship application was easy and not time-consuming. It allowed me to align my experiences with SHRM’s values and describe what I hoped to achieve by receiving the scholarship funds.
  • Jennifer Chan: My journey through the application process was smooth, thanks to the simplicity of the requirements. Initially, I didn’t believe I had a chance but decided to apply after encouragement from a friend. Receiving the scholarship opened up opportunities to engage more actively with HR-related activities.
  • Casey Northrop: The scholarship application process was pretty easy to get through. It allowed me to reflect on my accomplishments and goals, as well as remind myself why I am doing what I am doing.

AM: How did you use Scholarship Funds?

  • Amy F. Painter: I utilized the funds to attend my first Virginia SHRM conference in April after successfully passing my SHRM test.
  • Jennifer Chan: I used the funds to support my spring semester of graduate school at Bridgewater College.
  • Casey Northrop: I was able to use the scholarship funds to make a direct payment to my student loan that I took out for my master’s degree.

A huge thank you to our 2023 HRVA Scholarship recipients for their inspiring stories. In the next episode, we’ll delve deeper into the profound impact of the HR Virginia Scholarship Program on their professional journeys. Join us in the concluding part of this series as Amy F. Painter, Jennifer Chan, and Casey Northrop share how the scholarship has influenced their careers and aspirations, providing invaluable insights for prospective applicants.
